Ludlum Universal Software is a network software package that allows users access to the collected and displayed radiation levels and alarm statuses from multiple Ludlum radiation detection instruments, such as area monitors, sample monitors, and portal monitors. Different users may have access to different sets of instruments either by instrument type (e.g. area monitors) or by locations (e.g. all connected instruments in a certain building). Instruments that have continuous readings may be monitored for trends over specific times such as by the hour, day, or week. Instruments like gamma portal monitors can record individual scans and maintain a scan history.

All data is stored in a SQL database using the Microsoft SQL Server, which must be installed locally on your network. An existing SQL Server can be used. For new installations, a free version, Microsoft SQL Server Express, can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

The server can be configured to send emails on alarms or failure events, quickly alerting the necessary personnel. Email destinations are assigned by groups of instruments (each instrument specified by serial number) and set for up to three different shifts, so only those personnel responsible for specific instruments will receive email notifications. Alarm and failure event notifications include information describing the type of event, the involved instrument, the location, the reading, and user-added comments (comments can be added to data after it is stored via the web interface). The email notifications are also customizable with the ability for the user to define the email subject and additional message content.

Optional Ethernet cameras may be configured to take an image when an alarm or failure event occurs, store it in the database, and include it in the email notifications. The application provides a link directly to the camera to view live video.
